In Music Timing is everything – how to get the beat!

Well had a great Jam session the other day with my friend Jimmy J. ! But took a while for the session to heat up and the main problem was with the timing of our playing. Music can sound sweet or like the clanging of a bad piston in a car. Just like the piston if the timing is off the music will not run right. So how did we get into time and how can you do this too? Try to jam along with a drum machine or something that has a beat to it. This will improve your timing and ability to keep a rhythm going. Many instructional methods now have CDs with them that you play along with. If you can afford a drum machine or guitar effects pedal or amp with a drum machine built in go for it. You can also buy a keyboard or Synth that has rhythmns and patterns built in to play along with. The Korg R3 and the Boss BR1600 both mentioned in other articles have these features to some extent. The more reinforced the Beat is the easier it is to follow. This means having a drum and Bass guitar track is usually easier to follow than just a drum track. I hope this will help you. Thanks alex, see you do a Iphone blog. I had thought of buying one but the did not tether at that time and so I bought a HTC fuze which is great for using as a satellite modem but the phone browser sucks. I am waiting to see if Iphone gets it act together so I can use stereo bluetooth headphones to listen to my music and has a better tethering program or maybe will go with a new android based phone when they come out if they do both. Too bad our phone companies are so restrictive on software in phones and applications since in Japan the phones do everything and they are all 4G with 5G coming soon!

  3. To get a good beat and rhythm going one needs to practice it a slower tempo than normal. Then as soon as confidence comes up raise the tempo(be sure you are not missing any beats) to the desired level. To improvise keep in mind the standard progressions and cadences. These will come in handy as they will help you form structure and endings to anything you make.

    Great comment John,
I usually do this playing the sequence many times slowly and increasing the tempo until it is the tempo I require for that song. I have also found that you can break a progression into simpler segments and on a computer system they will come together to sound like one sequence if the timing is adjusted properly. Thanks for the comment!

Hi there, I believe that your argument is rather incisive as it talks about plenty of interesting info. By the way, was curious whether you would willing to interchange web links with my site, as I am searching to compile more web links to further enlarge and get better web exposure for my website. I do not mind you putting my links at the main page, just getting this links on this particular link is good and sufficient. On the other hand, would you please reach me at my web portal if you are keen in swapping links, I would really value that. Thanks a lot and I hope to get a reply from you soon!
